Peters Declares Snow Removal Emergency

On-street parkers can be fined.

Peters issued a "snow removal emergency" on Friday afternoon.  Due to current and predicted snow falls a Snow Removal Emergency is being declared for Peters Township. All on street parking is prohibited so that snow removal operations may occur. This declaration of emergency shall be for a period 24 hours. Violators are subject to fines. In addition the Community Recreation Center will close at 4 p.m. today due to the weather and the Peters Township schools are being dismissed 45 minutes early. Peters Holiday Festivities Planned for Sunday

The annual Frosty's Fun House and Tree Lighting/Holiday Party is Dec. 2.

'Tis the season! The entire Peters Township community and surrounding area are invited to the annual Frosty's Fun House and Tree Lighting/Holiday Party on Saturday, Dec. 2. Frosty's Fun House is from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Community Recreation Center. Children ages 10 and under are invited to make holiday crafts families can cherish forever. Parents are asked to remain with their children during the event. The fee is $5 for residents and $8 for non-residents. The fun continues at 6 p.m. when the Tree Lighting/Holiday Party begins at the Peters Township Municipal Complex. Listen to holiday carols and see Santa arrive on the shiny fire truck. Soldier Collection Drive a Huge Success

The Peters Township Boy Scouts from Troop 1320 counted more than 2,000 donated items and nearly $800.

The Peters Township Soldier Collection Drive was a huge success!  Collection boxes were located throughout the Peters Township School District, at the Peters Township Public Library and the Community Recreation Center—as well as at a concert earlier in the season.  Boy Scouts from Troop 1320 counted 2,346 donated items.  Amanda Thompson, of Operation Troop Appreciation, reported the total as 420 pounds of donated items, and $794.  Service Projects Coordinator Rita Reo said she's excited about the community's involvement. Cleanup Day This Saturday in Peters

The annual event starts at 9 a.m. at the Community Recreation Center. Can you lend a hand?

Sunday is Earth Day, which means Saturday is the annual day designated for cleaning up Peters Township. You want to keep Peters a beautiful place to live, right?  Help out at this year's Cleanup & Environmental Quality Board Recycling Day tomorrow. The event, set up to collect trash and debris, will start at 9 a.m. at the Community Recreation Center. The township will provide volunteers with garbage bags, gloves, a vest and a shirt.  The EQB Recycling event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Batteries, scrap metal, tires and electronics will be accepted. This event will be held at the Department of Public Works facility (across from the CRC).  For further details, click here. Upper St. Clair CRC to Host Second Annual Lifeguard Showdown

The competition is a chance for lifeguards to showcase their skills.

Lifeguards everywhere have pulled out their sunblock, whistles and bathing suits from last summer for a new season of protecting public swimmers. The Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair (CRC) will be holding its Second Annual Lifeguard Showdown—sponsored in part by the local American Red Cross—on July 17. Lifeguard teams will compete in a series of seven events, including a written skills test, swim relay, drills and CPR/AED skill tests. There will be four individuals judging the competition to ensure that everything adheres to the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training standards and guidelines. Here are some annual and seasonal activities at the PT Community Recreation Center that you definitely won't want to miss.

This week’s Great Escape takes us to the Peters Township Community Recreation Center. In 2010, more than 20,000 participants took part in CRC programs and activities. Chances are you were one of those people. So, you probably already know about some of the spectacular summer activities slated to occur over the coming months. But, just in case you don’t, you’ll want to take note of the following annual and seasonal events. On June 11, wake up at the crack of dawn, grab your running shoes and hit the CRC for the annual Peters Township 5K Race. Peter Cottontail Hops into Peters

The Easter Bunny hopped over to the Peters Township Community Recreation Center for the Bunny Hop.

On Saturday, lots of parents packed their kids in the car and said, “Let’s go to the hop!” They were referring to the Peters Township Community Recreation Center’s annual Bunny Hop. The event thrilled lots of area boys and girls with fun and games, and of course, the prerequisite visit from the big bunny himself. Droves of children rushed the community center where they threw balls, bowled and searched for special prizes hidden inside Easter eggs. The kids could also paint, color and glue all sorts of Easter-related crafts at several long tables filled with buttons, beads, crayons, markers, glue sticks and various other art supplies. Gardening 101: 'Weed It, Water It and Love It'

Bonnie Davis and Rose Trunzo dig up their secrets to making a great garden.

Mary, Mary Quite Contrary could have learned a thing or two from Rose Trunzo and Bonnie Davis. The two gave an informative lecture and PowerPoint slide presentation on gardening at the Community Recreation Center. Rose Trunzo, without an ounce of irony, spoke at length about flowers, and Bonnie Davis covered the vegetable patch. The two offered quite a bit of important information for neophyte gardeners. Davis encouraged the participants to observe and report. “What grows in your area? Take a leisurely drive or stroll around your neighborhood,” she said. “See what works and what doesn’t.” She emphasized planning. “Evaluate the conditions when determining which plants and vegetables to buy. 'Dinosaur Days' Dazzles Young Minds

Kathy Heinz offers hands-on, educational projects for little ones at the Community Rec Center.

The dinosaur may be extinct, but after a few million years, they’re hotter than ever. Kathy Heinz made the dinosaurs come alive with “Dinosaur Days” at the Peters Township Community Recreation Center. Heinz taught several area kids the fun facts about fossils. She created volcanoes, dinosaur eggs and a geyser. The class is geared for children between the ages of two to six. Heinz wants the kids to get the science bug early by offering up some cool, fun projects. The volcano is probably the most famous of the fun science projects, made with vinegar and baking soda.
