Roads, Ramps, Tunnel Closed This Weekend

Choose your route from Peters Township carefully this weekend. Several key roads, ramps and a tunnel will be closed. Below is a summary of the major closings and restrictions, courtesy of PennDOT. Parkway East Tunnel rehabilitation The inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday for rehabilitation work. The outbound (eastbound) tunnel will remain open.  Bridge inspection Work to inspect the Smithfield Street Bridge over eastbound I-376 will occur from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday. Single lane closures will occur on eastbound I-376 in the area under the Smithfield Street Bridge (near Grant Street Exit 71A). Here's a roundup of PennDOT work around the area this weekend.

Banksville Road work isn't done yet! PennDOT will continue milling and paving work on Banksville Road this weekend, which will affect those heading to Pittsburgh from Peters Township via Washington Road. Drivers can expect single lane closures between Carnahan Road/Wenzell Avenue and Beverly Road from 8 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. There's more: Parkway West/Fort Pitt Bridge: The ramps that connect the Fort Pitt Bridge (I-376) to Commonwealth Place/Liberty Avenue and the Boulevard of the Allies in the City of Pittsburgh will be closed from approximately midnight on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday. Busy Weekend for PennDOT

Here are five key projects that may impact your weekend travel plans.

Getting from Peters Township to your destination may be challenging this weekend as crews perform maintenance and repair work on some of the area's busiest highways. I-579 Veterans Bridge Ramp improvements Traffic on the northbound I-579 Veterans Bridge approach to the Parkway North (I-279) will be reduced to a single lane from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. on Monday. Crews will be replacing expansion dams. Single lane traffic will occur between the off-ramp to Route 28 and the Parkway North.   Parkway North/Fort Duquesne Bridge Ramp improvements Crews will be applying an overlay on the ramp, also known as the Portal Bridge, that connects the inbound Fort Duquesne Bridge to the outbound Fort Pitt Bridge and the Parkway East. Fort Pitt Bridge Cleaning To Mean Lane Restrictions

Overnight cleaning begins Tuesday.

The Fort Pitt Bridge will be reduced to single lanes in each direction starting Tuesday for cleaning. Single lane closures will occur as needed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. weeknights through July 1, according to PennDOT. Only one direction will be restricted at a time. Crews from Thornbury, Inc. of Sunbury, will be doing the cleaning. Outbound restrictions will be coordinated to minimize impacts on traffic leaving downtown events. Motorists are advised to use caution, slow down, and expect changing traffic patterns when traveling through the area.
