The solicited donations are to offset expenses for some firefighters to pay for legal fees associated with contract negotiations, according to the fire department's president.
Greg Nardine, president of the Peters Township Volunteer Fire Department, has written a letter to residents alerting them to a phone solicitation happening in the township. Nardine wrote that a company soliciting donations on behalf of the Peters Township Professional Firefighters Association has been calling residents. However, Nardine stated, the organization is not affiliated with the volunteer fire department and the donations are not shared with the department. "The career firefighters within the department contracted to this company to solicit donations to offset expenses to pay for legal fees associated with their contract negotiations with the township," Nardine stated. "We were assured by the PTPFA that notification to the public …

FEMA and Peters Township Fire Department offer some ideas for a safer holiday season.
About 3,500 Americans die each year in fires and about 20,000 are injured. "Chimney fires and bad cooking are common this time of year," said Peters Township Fire Department President Greg Nardine. "If you are using, or plan on using your chimney, be sure it has been cleaned by a professional. "People are in a hurry (this time of year) and seem to be forgetful—unplug your tree before you go to bed or leave the house. "You have got to have an evacuation plan and do not try to extinguish the fire yourself. Get out of the house. "A family on Trotwood drive in North Strabane went out on Christmas Eve in 2004 and left their kids at home with their uncle. A space heater caught the home on fire and one child and the uncle died." To avoid holiday …

Proceeds will go toward the purchase of a new fire safety house.
There's still time to join in on today's scramble event at Rolling Hills Country Club. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., golfers will hit the course to benefit the purchase of a new fire safety house for the Peters Township Fire Department. Event coordinator and volunteer firefighter of 11 years, Greg Nardine said he always looks forward to the outing because it brings many community faces together for a great day of fun. The fire safety house is a mobile training center that travels to local schools and events (community day) to train both children and adults on fire and smoke behavior, he said. A new fire house costs nearly $50,000 and is built out of state. Nardine noted the department's current house was purchased through the golf outing's …

How much do you know about the new Pa. law that went into effect Jan. 1?
The new Pa. sprinkler law, effective Jan. 1, which requires installation in all single and two-family homes, has people talking. Plumbing contractors and fire departments have researched and believe it can save lives. For Jeremy Richter, Peters resident and Estimator/Project Manager for Ryco, Inc., the cost of the system versus the cost of a life is "pretty insignificant." He's worked in the industry for 15 years and has done research on this topic for quite a while. "If there is a fire in a home, this fire suppression system is meant to suppress the fire, long enough to get the homeowner out of the house," Richter said. "It's not meant to save property, but to save your life. They did this in Flagstaff, Ariz. 10 years ago and there has…

Got the call a week ago. Told the guy I wasn't giving. It shows up on the caller ID as Encore Music. Typical union ploy. Get others to pay for their issues and problems.   more ›
