Pittsburgh Pirates draftee Jimmy Rider scored the eventual game-winning run Monday in the College World Series.
Some are calling the Kent State Golden Flashes the darlings of the 2012 College World Stories—Venetia native Jimmy Rider is credited for much of that success. Rider, A 2008 Peters Township High School graduate, scored the game-winning run Monday night to eliminate top-ranked University of Florida. Entering today's action, Kent State is one of five teams remaining in tournament play. Rider, a shortstop, is the Mid-American Conference's all-time hits leader with 353 hits. On Monday, he had two singles and a double for his team-leading, 32nd, multi-hit game of the season. Also, he extended his single-season records for hits (106) and doubles (30). The Peters High School baseball standout was selected in the 34th round of the MLB draft.
Jordan "J.J." Jankowski, a 2008 graduate of Peters Township High School, was selected last week by the Houston Astros in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball draft. A senior at Catawba College in North Carolina, the right-hander was 9-2 this season with a 3.79 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 901⁄3 innings, according to the Tribune-Review. Jankowski leads the NCAA Division II in strikeouts, the Post-Gazette reports. He is the second baseball star from Peters Township to make it to the Major League this draft. Jimmy Rider, also a 2008 graduate, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both Jankowski and Rider were named to the Post-Gazette All-Area baseball team in 2008.

A former Peters Township High School baseball standout is sliding into home as he slides into a chance at the pros. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Jimmy Rider, a second baseman-shortstop, in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Wednesday. Rider graduated from Peters in 2008. The Post-Gazette reports that after WPIAL play in high school, Rider helped Kent State become the first Mid-American Conference team to make the NCAA Super Regionals. Earlier this season he became the all-time hits leader in the MAC and he has 346 hits heading into the Super Regionals.
