Coach Kirby Wilson Talks Recovery, Attends Steelers Camp

The running backs coach was severely burned during a fire at his Seven Fields town house in January.

Steelers running backs Coach Kirby Wilson is staging a comeback. Severely burned during a January fire at his town home in Seven Fields, the veteran running backs coach is attending Steelers training camp this week at St. Vincent College in Latrobe. Last Thursday, he shared his joy at being back with the team—and his determination to make a full recovery. “It’s great to be back,” Wilson told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It’s my most rewarding camp ever.” In April, Wilson returned to the Steelers to participate in the NFL Draft, including evaluating running backs. Steelers Coach Remains in Critical Condition

Steelers officials say running backs Coach Kirby Wilson remains in critical condition after being burned on over 45 percent of his body in a fire earlier this month at his home.

The Steelers organization on Tuesday released an update on running backs Coach Kirby Wilson’s condition on behalf of the coach's family. The 50-year-old coach was severely burned Jan. 6 when an early-morning fire broke out in his townhouse on Jameson Way in Seven Fields. He was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh, where he remains in critical condition at the hospital's Trauma Burn Center. "In addition to burns sustained over 45 percent of his body, he has suffered a smoke inhalation injury and will require multiple operative procedures in the future," the Steelers statement said.   An answer to what caused the fire at Wilson’s home also may soon be on the way. Update: Neighbors Roust Steelers Coach from Burning Seven Fields Home

Running backs coach Kirby Wilson is being treated for serious burns at a Pittsburgh hospital after fire sweeps through his home near Cranberry.

Kirby Wilson, the running backs coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is being treated today for injuries after neighbors roused him from his burning townhouse early this morning in Seven Fields. Cranberry Township police and firefighters from Adams Township, Cranberry Township, Callery, Harmony, Zelienople and South Butler were dispatched to the blaze at 2:42 a.m. in the Estates of Seven Fields, a townhouse community. Neighbors said smoke was pouring out of the house at 141 Jameson Way, and a maintenance man for the complex said a stove in the kitchen may have caught fire. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 2:30 a.m. to the Estates of Seven Fields, where Wilson lives in a townhouse at 141 Jameson Way. Neighbors said smoke was pouring out of the house after a stove caught fire in the kitchen. Wilson, who was the only person in the townhouse, was badly burned. A neighbor who smelled smoke called 911, then pounded on the door of Wilson's home until Wilson answered it. Wilson was burned on his arms and legs and was wheezing from apparent smoke inhalation. WPXI-TV is reporting Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital Friday morning.

WPXI-TV is reporting that Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson was "badly burned" in a house fire in Seven Fields, Butler County early Friday morning. He was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital. It was unclear which facility is caring for the coach—Mercy Hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital and UPMC-Presbyterian did not list him as a patient. There is no word on his condition. The Steelers are preparing for their playoff game Sunday afternoon against the Denver Broncos.
