Here is what you need to know about the upcoming improvements to this main throughway.

A multi-million dollar construction project on Valley Brook road will begin later this month, township officials said. Work will begin then to reconstruct and upgrade the intersection to help alleviate congestion. Township Manager Michael Silvestri said about 11,000 vehicles travel through the intersection each day. Why would you want to tie Arrowhead to Route 19? Are you suggesting adding a bike lane to Route 19? Of all the places I would prefer to NOT ride a bike or walk, Route 19 -as currently constructed - is pretty high on that list.   more ›

Peters Council Mulling Seismic Testing Regulations

A possible amendment to include regulations for seismic testing associated with Marcellus Shale drilling is being addressed by council. And one company has said it would like to commence that activity in a portion of the community.

Peters Township Council on Monday discussed amending its oil and gas ordinance to include regulations for seismic testing. Seismic testing is used in the Marcellus Shale industry to determine the geo structure of an area, and where the best place would be to commence drilling activities. Manager Michael Silvestri said the solicitor is reviewing language in the oil and gas drilling ordinances of nearby Cecil and Robinson townships regarding seismic testing. Council took no action on the proposed amendment, instead opting to allow its solicitor to tweak language to ensure that it is compliant with the state's law governing Marcellus Shale drilling, known as Act 13. Silvestri noted that the topic of seismic testing was brought up a second …

It would be nice if our manager Mr. Silvestri informed us on exactly how shallow the mines are in that area, that area from lake jo-ann (can tell im old) to hackett is known to have less than 70 ft of cover in many areas. There is potential for problems in this area not related to gas. This has always been an issue, Everyone or 99% of residents live over a mine, but yet we think gas drilling is a …   more ›

HVAC System Replacement Project to Commence in June

Township manager Michael Silvestri said the project would likely extend through November.

The aging heating and cooling system at the Peters Township Municipal Building run the temperature gamut—some run too hot and some are always too cold. Manager Michael Silvestri said those issues will finally be addressed this June, when the township embarks on its HVAC replacement project. "We've had a lot of problems," he said, adding that the system was last renovated in 1986, when an addition to the building was constructed. Silvestri said the project will entail changing the heating and cooling methodology, and willl also include improvements that will make it more energy efficient. The basic piping, however, will remain the same. The project will be completed by East West Mechanics, and is expected to cost about $480,000. Silvestri …

Garbage Pickup To Be Completed Wednesday

Waste Management missed a number of neighborhood pickups last week.

Additional garbage trucks are in Peters Township Wednesday to pick up the trash that was not picked up last week. Two trucks are dedicated to picking up the trash that was missed on Saturday. Waste Management missed the trash pickups on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last week. The pickups were already delayed because of the Christmas holiday. Waste Management said Saturday pickups were missed because of inclement weather, but it's unclear why Thursday and Friday pickups were missed. The following message was posted on the township's website from the township Manager Michael Silvestri: I have sent a formal notice of violation to Waste Management and notified them that their response to this issue is unacceptable.  I apologize to our …

Candlelit Montour Trail Draws Peters Township Supporters

The annual Twilight Trail Walk, welcoming patrons and pups, started nine years ago. Since then, it's grown significantly.

In its 9th year, the Twilight Trail Walk attracted Peters Township residents in droves to participate in a chief effort to maintain the staple passageway.   For a $7 donation, night walkers—including dogs—trekked from Farmhouse Coffee to St. Petersburg Center (or vice versa) along the Montour Trail, which was lit beautifully with luminarias. Parents and children received a glow stick/necklace, a raffle ticket, a drink and Eat’n Park cookie ticket, and dog treats were provided for the pups. Other items, such as Blinkies, popcorn and SnoCones were for sale—Peters students Morgan Everson and Korie Roberts served up the icy treats. Last year, more than 500 people attended the annual event. “We’re hopeful for that number again,” said Mark …

Council Names Steering Committee Members

Eight Peters Township residents were chosen to assist in planning the future of the community.

Peters Township officials have been interviewing residents in recent weeks as part of an effort to find those interested in helping plan the future of the community.  Every 10 years, the township reviews its comprehensive land use plan and seeks residents' assistance in development.  Monday night, council named eight Steering Committee members. The purpose of forming a committee is to provide a necessary cross section of Peters, according to Township Manager Michael Silvestri.  Silvestri said those chosen will attend a series of meetings and share their opinions, where officials can then gauge input from others.  Selected members are:  According to council, 16 people interviewed for the position. Each council member picked eight and they …

I disappointed with the selection of Bill Merrill to this committee. He already has his fingers too much on Peters Township via his membership on the School Board, his wife already serving on the Peters Township Board of Directors, and his cable TV episodes where he spews forth his clearly biased, republican messages.   more ›

Council Votes to Hire Additional Firefighter

Peters Township Council unanimously voted Monday to amend the firefighters' collective bargaining agreement allowing two full-time firefighters on daylight shifts.

Peters Township Council voted unanimously Monday night to amend the firefighters' collective bargaining agreement to allow two full-time firefighters on daylight shifts. “Hiring whomever is not part of the agreement," said township Manager Michael Silvestri. "That’s a separate issue, but we are able to make the selection—and we can go up to three years for any person on that contract, but we’re hoping for more permanency beyond that." Councilman David Ball then motioned to hire an additional firefighter to supplement the agreement. Council voted 7-0 in favor of the hire, to which Peters Township fire Chief Daniel Coyle said two candidates are available for immediate hire. Council voted 6-1 to move forward to negotiate with LSL Planning, …
