Peters Council Passes Crematory Ordinance

The decision was unanimous.

Peters Township Council unanimously passed Monday night a crematory ordinance with regulations more stringent than the state's. Township Manager Michael Silvestri said there are no regulations in the township's old ordinance and that the new one will "give us more protection." He said it is illegal for the township to ban crematories and that the ordinance could not include a setback from the Montour Trail because there would then be no place in the industrial district zone for a crematory to be built. The ordinance passed includes so many revisions township staff felt they needed to hold Monday night's second public hearing. Some of the revisions include: Click here and scroll to the bottom of the Peters Township website homepage to find …

Roger- yes to some. My interest is in how the legislation evolved- and it was obviously a response to Belusko. I also believe that there is some legal wranglings involved- which affects me as a Pt resident.   more ›

Dog Lovers Team Up for National Dog Day

National Dog Day is Sunday, Aug. 26. What will you do to celebrate man's best friend?

You may celebrate man's best friend on the regular. Do you walk your pup through Peters Township? Or perhaps down the Montour Trail making a pit stop at The Pooch Pitt? If not, Sunday's the day to do so!  Aug. 26 is National Dog Day. That's the day animal advocate Colleen Paige has designated for honoring all those dogs who bring in the paper, and all those dogs who are neglected. Not to be confused with National Mutt Day (Dec. 2), National Puppy Day (March 23) or National Pet Day (April 11), each of the 19 national and international pet days founded by Paige are all designed with one thing in mind: to draw attention to the need for pet rescue. Paige, author, pet behaviorist and self-proclaimed "pet celebrity lifestyle expert" founded the …

Peters Library Resumes Walking Program

It's that time of year! Take a hike with library patrons while listening to a new book or a favorite author.

A study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that although more Americans are walking, they are not exercising enough to reap the health benefits. At least 150 minutes per week of aerobic exercise, like brisk walking, helps prevent heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, depression and some forms of cancer, according to a recent release from Peters Township Public Library. To help patrons in their efforts to exercise daily, the library is resuming its popular “Listen While You Walk” program beginning Thursday, Sept. 6 at 9:15 a.m. The program, beginning its second year, offers walkers another way to exercise while listening to a new book or favorite author. Staff and volunteers will introduce attendees to a …

Nearby: Montour Trail Bridges Open

Officials and Montour Trail fans gathered Saturday afternoon for the official opening of the two spans in Cecil Township.

Community leaders joined Montour Trail volunteers and enthusiasts Saturday for a ceremony celebrating the long-awaited opening of two connector bridges in Cecil Township. The two bridges were constructed as a single project with a total cost of about $1.9 million.  Funding came from the National Transportation Enhancement Program, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Allegheny Trail Alliance, Washington County Local Share Account, Washington County Tourist Promotion Agency, the Trail Volunteer Fund of the Pittsburgh Foundation, the Montour Trail Council, and the Cecil Friends of the Montour Trail. Private donations and Montour’s Volunteer Construction crews completed the project. “These two bridges are of …

“These two bridges are of inestimable value because they eliminate a pair of troublesome gaps in the middle of the 50-plus-mile Montour Trail system,” said council President Ned Williams in a statement. “They will make this central Washington County portion of the trail a highly attractive destination.” I agree- has Mr. Williams and / or his group had ANY input into the forthcoming ValleyBrook Rd…   more ›

Candlelit Montour Trail Draws Peters Township Supporters

The annual Twilight Trail Walk, welcoming patrons and pups, started nine years ago. Since then, it's grown significantly.

In its 9th year, the Twilight Trail Walk attracted Peters Township residents in droves to participate in a chief effort to maintain the staple passageway.   For a $7 donation, night walkers—including dogs—trekked from Farmhouse Coffee to St. Petersburg Center (or vice versa) along the Montour Trail, which was lit beautifully with luminarias. Parents and children received a glow stick/necklace, a raffle ticket, a drink and Eat’n Park cookie ticket, and dog treats were provided for the pups. Other items, such as Blinkies, popcorn and SnoCones were for sale—Peters students Morgan Everson and Korie Roberts served up the icy treats. Last year, more than 500 people attended the annual event. “We’re hopeful for that number again,” said Mark …

Committee Kickoff Sparks Future Growth of Peters

Idyllic landscape, rural character, home building boom. Chosen community leaders plan to engage with the public on what's next for Peters Township.

Members of a newly formed committee convened Tuesday night at Peters Township Community Recreation Center for the first of many meetings focused on the future of PT. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Planning Director Ed Zuk, regarding the initial meeting—part of a 14-month process. By law, the municipality is required to update its plan every 10 years—according to the PA Municipalities Planning Code (PA MPC).  Previously, eight Steering Committee members were chosen following an interview process, as well as two appointees from township departments. Hired consultants and township officials led the conversation Tuesday with an overview of what a comprehensive plan is; why it’s important; their current approach; the vision and …

Can we not increase millage to fund this! How about reassesing the existing homes. There are thousands of residents living in $400,000 to 500,000 homes paying $2,000 a year in taxes while new homeowners that have built homes in the last 7 years pay $9,000. Montour Trail Connectors Set to Open

A ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, July 28.

Living in Peters Township, you're more than familiar with the Montour Trail. The multi-use, non-motorized recreational rail-trail spans 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., and will extend 46 miles from Moon Township near Coraopolis to Clairton once current construction is complete.  A ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, July 28, to recognize the opening of two bridges built to fill gaps on the trail in nearby Cecil, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  Georgetown Road at mile 27.3 and Morganza Road at mile 27.1 are expected to open a few days prior, the newspaper reports.  Festivities begin at noon at Cecil's Hendersonville Park.  The annual Twlight Trail Walk is scheduled for Friday, July 27, in Peters. I rode through there yesterday. The guardrails are not built, and the bridges are completely blocked. Also, the new crushed stone is very loose and dangerous to ride on.   more ›
