Peters Township is looking for new members for its Parks and Recreation Board. The township’s council tabled a motion to reappoint Michelle Chavel to another 3-year term and instead decided to solicit more candidates before making a decision. She has been serving on the board since 2009. Anyone interested in submitting his or her name to be on the seven-person board should contact township Manager Michael Silvestri. Peters Township Parks and Recreation Board has plans in the works to convert some baseball fields into a multipurpose field that could be used by football and lacrosse teams. Parks and Recreation Director Michele Harmel outlined the plans for Peters Township Council Monday evening. Under the plan, fields 3 and 4 would change from two baseball diamonds and one practice field to a multipurpose grass field usable for football and lacrosse. The baseball association has asked that one of the baseball diamonds be kept to use for tournaments. The parks and recreation department will impose a $500 fine on organizations failing to document criminal background checks for coaches.
Groups using the Peters Township Parks and Recreation athletic fields will soon be facing a fine of $500 if they fail to comply with a township ordinance passed in 2006, which requires them to prove that their coaches have all passed criminal and child abuse background checks. Township council has given the parks and recreation board the power to impose the fines if sports associations do not produce documentation that their coaches have received Pennsylvania State Police background checks.
