Election Guide: Voting Hours, Polling Places for Today's Primary

Here's what you need to know to vote in today's primary election.

Several candidates are seeking nomination for positions on Peters Township Council and Peters Township School Board. Democrats and Republicans can vote anytime between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., when the polls officially close. Don't know where to go to vote? Peters Township School Board: Who Are You Voting for, and Why?

Tell us which candidates you're backing in the May 21 primary.

Four sitting Peters Township school directors and three newcomers are seeking nomination for four seats on the local school board. Six of the candidates have cross-filed and are seeking to secure the Democratic and Republican nominations. Current board President Cindy Golembiewski, current Vice President Lori Cuervo and directors David Paul Hvidos and Sue Smith all cross-filed. Newcomers Lisa Anderson and Rebecca Bowman have also cross-filed for the May 21 primary election. Another candidate, Jamison Hardy, is on the ballot as a Republican only. So, who are you voting for? Jeremy - well put. I did not grow up here in Peters but this township is worse than any clique in the High School. Most of the people here have never traveled outside of Western PA - yet they have these views of what is right and best for Peters.   more ›

Seven Candidates Seeking Peters Township School Board Posts

Four incumbents and three newcomers are seeking nomination in the May 21 primary.

Four sitting Peters Township school directors and three newcomers are seeking nomination for four seats on the board in the May 21 primary. Six of the candidates have cross-filed, and are seeking to secure the Democratic and Republican nominations. Current board President Cindy Golembiewski, current vice president Lori Cuervo and directors David Paul Hvidos and Sue Smith all cross-filed. Newcomers Lisa Anderson and Rebecca Bowman have also cross-filed for the May 21 primary. Another man, Jamison Hardy, is on the ballot as a Republican only. Hardy was being responsible and taking steps to avoid risk. Why do we think that others owe us any favors? It was not Hardy's decision to do risk analysis between pickup at the lot, over against Old Washington Rd. It is not the church's direct responsibility to manage risk on bus pickup locations. Seven Candidates Vying For Four School Board Seats

The public is invited to a candidate forum Tuesday, April 23, at the middle school.

Seven candidates are running for four open Peters Township School Board seats in the upcoming municipal primary election on May 21. Candidates who are running are Lisa Anderson, Rebecca Bowman, Lori Cuervo, Cynthia Golembiewski, Dr. Jamison J. Hardy, David Hvizdos and Sue Smith. All have cross-filed on both the Republican and Democratic ballots, except for Hardy, who only filed on the Republican ballot. The public is invited to attend a candidate forum at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Peters Township Middle School auditorium. Peters Parents Protest Sex-Ed Program

A large group of residents spoke out at a school board meeting.

A large group of parents attended the Peters Township School Board meeting Monday night to protest the human growth and development program being used in the middle school, according to the Observer-Reporter. A majority of the residents in attendence appeared to think the curriculum was inappropriate for fifth and sixth graders, according to the report.  Some of the topics parents said they were not happy about their children learning included masturbation, orgasms and homosexuality. The newspaper stated that the materials provided in class come from Teen Outreach at Washington Hospital. Respectfully, Roger, I disagree with several points: 1) A leading thought behind a "just teach the facts" approach is that it offers the opportunity to dismantle walls that are built when faced with topics that are considered uncomfortable, like sexuality and development. Online Petition Circulating in Support of New High School in Peters

School enrollment exceeds the capacity of the structure, according to the petition.

More than 300 people have signed an online petition circulating in Peters Township demanding that the school board address overcrowding issues at the high school. "Student enrollment exceeds the capacity of the structure, increasing security issues, failure of the building structure to meet academic needs, the impact of the aging high school facility on the value of community real estate, and the loss of potential income to the community through school district revenue," the petition states. Three PTA members spoke at Monday night's school board meeting urging the board to consider building a new high school. Search Is On For Next Peters Township Superintendent

The school board hopes to have someone in place by August.

The Peters Township School Board is hoping to have a new superintendent in place by the beginning of the 2013-14 school year in August. Director David Hvizdos revealed that there was a closed meeting with the hired search firm on Feb. 14. The ad has been posted for the job (see below) and the board plans on organizing focus groups to find out what the community wants to see in the next superintendent, according to Hvizdos. Peters Dance Team to Appear on National TV

The school board recognized the high school's dance team on Monday night.

The Peters Township School Board recognized the Peters Township High School's varsity dance team Monday night for their first place finish at the National Dance Team Championships in Orlando, FL. The competition will air on ESPN U on March 10 at 10 a.m., according to coach Barb Deliere. "This is a very hardworking group of girls," coach Nique Shuster said. "They deserved it (the national title)." Varsity team members are Jess Joseph; Carla Buzzatto; Lexi Uhler; Lyss Townsend; Maddie Williams; Megan Amelio; Savanna Schweizer; Val Mikec; Sydney Scott; Erika Miller; Robyn Bisignani; Sam Abraham; Natalie Leven; and Kylie Pollack.

Board Approves Basketball Court Upgrade

Peters Township Basketball Association has donated money to pay for the renovations.

The Peters Township School Board has greenlighted refurbishment of the outdoor basketball courts at Peters Township High School.  The board voted Monday night to award the bid on refinishing the court surface to Lutz Tennis & Asphalt Company at a cost not to exceed $8,550. Steve Stuck of the Peters Township Basketball Association presented the board with a check for $9,671.00 to pay for the improvements. The association runs youth basketball programs for about 1,000 children from kindergarten through high school.  "Our board decided about a year ago to do some sort of project for an outdoor basketball court here in Peters Township. School Board Discusses Cyberbullying Policy, Welcomes Teachers

Peters Township Athletic Director Brian Geyer also spoke about good sportsmanship and the YES policy Monday night.

The new school year is about to begin and the Peters Township Board of School Directors wants you to know it's ready. Superintendent Dr. Nina Zetty welcomed the return of teachers Monday night at the regular board meeting. This week, teachers are preparing for the arrival of students next Monday. The board showed a slideshow presentation of teachers who were recognizing milestones in their career. The presentation featured teachers who were celebrating 20, 10 and five years of service in the district. The board members also approved the hire of new teachers, substitutes and other service personnel. Zetty praised incoming staff members.
