The 5-pound, 2-ounce baby boy is named for the Florida stadium where he was born. The Pittsburgh Pirates Friday delivered a basket of baby items, including a baseball outfit and baby sneakers.
His parents named him McKechnie for the baseball stadium where he was born Tuesday night. Actually, it was his dad Joseph Brand's idea. McKechnie K'Marion Brand came into the world to the sights and sounds of a baseball stadium preparing for spring training. "He wanted to see what all the noise was about," said mom Latasha Renee Kirk. Kirk, 29, said her baby wasn't due until April 1, and so when she felt some contractions while walking over to the "soft opening" party at McKechnie Field, she thought it was just Braxton Hicks contractions and figured there was no point to going to the hospital. "He fooled me," Kirk said. "He came out saying, 'It's April Fool's Day, Mom. I am here.'" Because she was convinced it wasn't time for the baby, …

On Sunday, Aug. 21, the Nevillewood Neighbors will host a pool party and cookout at the Club at Nevillewood to benefit Casey’s Clubhouse and the Pirates Charities Miracle League of the South Hills Field. The party and cookout will take place from 4–8 p.m. and will feature live music from local band Moscow Mule. Post-Gazette photographer James G. Klingensmith died Monday at age 100.
James G. Klingensmith, a city kid who became a local icon through a four-decade photojournalism career best known for snapping Maz's iconic Game 7 home run, died of natural causes Monday at Kane Regional Center in Scott Township. He was 100. Affectionately known as “Pap” and “Klinger” to a large network of family, friends and area media professionals, Klingensmith captured Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski’s excited rush around the bases after slugging the game-winning homer against the favored Yankees at Forbes Field in 1960. It remains the only walkoff homer in Game 7 World Series history. At his 100th birthday party earlier this month, the Scott resident described that he was able to capture that shot on little more than a gut …

“Forget about the curve ball, Ricky. Give him the heater.” —Coach Lou Brown, 'Major League'
I was a college intern at a major daily newspaper when PNC Park opened 10 years ago. I walked past the new stadium every day, sometimes stopping at one of its vendors to fuel my caffeine addiction. And on the way home I’d often get lost in the crowd of fans crossing the Roberto Clemente Bridge. My feet were usually sore from a day in the wrong kind of heels, but I walked confidently through the pain and sea of dads carrying toddlers on their shoulders. I smiled at everyone I passed and fell in love with the view of the Allegheny River twinkling in the setting sun. On my luckiest days, a saxophone player chose Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” instead of Glenn Frey’s “The Heat is On.” But my best evenings were spent inside the ballpark, not…

How will the team finish this season?
The Pirates have Pittsburgh buzzing about baseball again, but we ask you, "Are the Bucs for real this season?" Yes, the team's starting pitching has been outstanding, but can the pitching staff continue to carry the underperforming bats? How many games do you expect the 2011 Pirates to win? And is a .500 winning percentage enough to make this season a success?

You may have been to the pool or had a family barbecue, but summer officially starts June 21.
Whether it’s the beach or a porch-view vacation, everyone is ducking out of work early to spend a little more time in the sun. It’s Pittsburgh. We have to take what we can get. The summer solstice reminds us, “If you haven’t started celebrating summer yet…get cracking!” Sources say the summer solstice is a Latin word which breaks down to sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). When the sun hits its southernmost extreme it appears to be standing still. It’s all about the suns path (or rather Earth’s rotational path around the sun). This year, it will happen precisely on June 21 at 5:16 p.m. It’s winter solstice in Australia, but on Dec. 21 it will be flipped; they will have summer while we have winter. It’s recognized worldwide as an …
