The reloadable plastic smart cards are intended to eliminate the need for paper passes and tickets, according to the Port Authority.
Giant Eagle in Donaldson's Crossroads is among nearly 50 of the grocery chain's locations that will begin selling and renewing the Port Authority's new ConnectCard. The reloadable smart cards are intended to replace paper transit passes and tickets, according to a statement from the Port Authority of Allegheny County. Transit patrons can purchase weekly or monthly passes and load that amount onto their cards, then present the cards to ride a Port Authority vehicle. The McMurray Giant Eagle store is located at 2007 Washington Rd. and permits customers to buy and load a card for weekly or monthly use and to check their balances. The new cards are being sold at Giant Eagle locations throughout the area. Port Authority patrons who already have…

A tentative contract agreement that could prevent Port Authority service cuts has been reached.
The Port Authority, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85 and Allegheny County have reached a tentative contract agreement. If approved, the agreement is the first step in preventing the 35 percent service cuts, resulting in layoffs and closing of the Collier Garage and various park and ride lots around the area. The cuts were scheduled to take effect in September. That agreement will be considered by the Local 85 membership on Aug. 19 and the Port Authority Board, which will meet in the days following the union vote. Details will be made public at that time. Continue to follow Patch as details become available.

Friday through Monday, Peters Township trolley riders and drivers should allow extra time when traveling.
Port Authority will replace the rail crossing at Bethel Park’s West Library Station this weekend, detouring T service and impacting local auto traffic. Detours will be in effect from Friday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. until about 4:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 6. During this time, Blue Line-Library service will terminate at Lytle, where Peters Township riders may transfer to shuttle buses operating between Lytle and Library. Riders should allow for extra time when traveling. Regular T service should be restored before the start of morning service on Aug. 6, as stated in a release. Additionally, Route 88 (Library Road) will be closed near the Clifton Road intersection during this time. Auto traffic in both directions will be affected and motorists should…

Thirteen stops on Port Authority’s light rail lines will be eliminated on June 25, including the nearby West Library T stop at Library and Clifton roads in South Park. The stops selected for elimination were identified due to their low boarding counts and proximity to other stops. The longest distance any rider affected by the change would have to travel to reach another light rail stop is about 650 yards. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald last month called on Port Authority to make several changes to improve the efficiency of the system, including consolidation of light rail stops. "I’m glad to see the authority work proactively to address this issue. I understand that these stops were selected because the ridership was low and …

The Democratic Policy Committee will hold a public hearing Thursday, May 3, at 10 a.m. on the economic impact of public transit cuts. State Representatives Dan Deasy and Matt Smith, both D-Allegheny, will co-chair the hearing. "We have heard from many constituents on how the proposed cuts to the Port Authority will impact them, but the outcry from area businesses has greatly increased in recent months," Smith said. "They are being hit from both sides with reduced accessibility for customers and employees." Under the proposed cuts that would be effective Sept. 2, weekday service to Brookline would be reduced, and Saturday service would be eliminated. The Greentree Express, as well as service to Banksville and Mt. Washington, would be …

Pittsburgh Steelers fans who are making plan to attend the team's regular season home opener Sunday should keep in mind that the Port Authority of Allegheny County will not provide special bus service to Heinz Field or the North Shore this year. Fans still may use regular Port Authority bus and light-rail "T" service on game days. The Port Authority says it eliminated service to home Steelers games when it cut service and jobs on March 27 due to reductions in state funding. For route information, riders may visit www.portauthority.org or contact customer service at (412) 442-2000 or the TTY number, (412) 231-7007.
