President Obama has proposed making minimum wage $9 an hour—and some Democrats want to push the minimum wage above $10 an hour. What do you think?
A majority of Americans support President Barack Obama’s proposal to increase the minimum wage, according to NBC.com. Some 71 percent of those surveyed said they supported raising the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour from $7.25, while 27 percent opposed it, according to a Gallup Poll released Wednesday. States have the ability to set their own minimum wage level, as long as it is above the federal minimum wage. Pennsylvania maintains the federal standard at $7.25. The minimum wage in Pennsylvania for jobs where employees receive tips is $2.83. According to an editorial in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 2.9 percent of U.S. workers make minimum wage. A flurry of festivities will set Washington, D.C. in motion this week as President Barack Obama is sworn in Monday for his second term in office. With "Faith in America's Future" as the theme for the 2013 inauguration, the celebration will reflect the country's perseverance and unity, as well as commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the placement of the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol Dome in 1863. Last year, Congress and President Barack Obama agreed to a program—now known as the "fiscal cliff"— to reduce the federal deficit. If Congress and the president don't reach an agreement within the next few weeks, tax rates will rise in January for almost all Americans and major spending cuts will automatically occur next year in most government spending programs. Democrats and Republicans don't agree about how to best raise the federal government's revenues. The president and most congressional Democrats favor tax rate increases on the wealthiest Americans. President Barack Obama urged a crowd at Carnegie Mellon University today to stay the course, despite newly released June jobs numbers showing sluggish employment growth across the nation. "We knew we wouldn't be able to do it overnight, because these problems weren't created overnight," Obama told hundreds of supporters gathered near the university's College of Fine Arts during the sweltering July afternoon. The U.S. Department of Labor reported today that employers created 80,000 new jobs during June, leveling the nation's unemployment rate at 8.2 percent. Lasers have obstructed nearly 30 flights approaching Pittsburgh International since 2009.
Shining a laser at an aircraft or its point of travel is now illegal under federal law. President Obama on Feb. 14 signed into law the Federal Aviation Administration Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, which includes provisions that make it a criminal offense to aim a laser beam at an aircraft or its flight path. The crime is punishable by a fine of $250,000 and up to five years in prison. More than 28 incidents involving lasers obstructing aircrafts approaching Pittsburgh International Airport have been recorded since September 2009, according to U.S. Attorney David J. "As a candidate for president, I pledged to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end," Obama said in an article on The Huffington Post. President rolls out public-private partnership to spur technological advancements.
President Barack Obama visited Pittsburgh this morning to announce a new initiative between universities, businesses and the federal government to enhance research and technological development. Obama toured the Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center to learn more about upcoming technology and how it can spur economic growth in America. The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership would funnel $500 million to launch the public-private research initiative.
