Valley Brook Intersection Closes Wednesday

It will be the most significant road shutdown in Peters Township since the Valley Brook and East McMurray intersection project.

The time has come. The Valley Brook and Washington roads project is set to begin Wednesday, May 22. The construction will not wrap up until July 2014, at the earliest. The project will result in Valley Brook Road being closed just west of St. Petersburg Center, meaning access to Old Washington will be closed and vehicles will not be able to go under Route 19.  Through traffic on Route 19 itself will be minimally impeded during the construction. The official detours are Boyce Road from Route 19 to Mayview Road and East McMurray Road from Valley Brook tor Route 19. More than 11,000 vehicle trips per day will be displaced.  "This will be the most significant road shutdown the township has seen since the Valley Brook and East McMurray …

I am sure the improvement is much needed and will improve traffic flow considerably when completed. I am particularly pleased with the bridge connecting the trail. A concern I have is the absence of sidewalks along McMurray. How can we have two schools (with how many students?) without sidewalks? I sincerely hope with adding thousands of cars a day there are additional police officers to aid with…   more ›

'Great December' Helps Road Projects

Crews were able to get more construction work done because of a warm December.

The unseasonably warm weather this month hasn’t just been a nice way to avoid chilly winter temperatures. It’s also giving construction crews a chance to catch up on roadwork before the snow hits. PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said work has ended on major paving projects, but crews still are able to perform work on bridges, install guard rails guardrails and put up signs. “It’s been a great December for contractors and PennDOT to get projects done by the end of the year,” Struzzi said. “It’s more construction in December than in recent memory, and that’s good because we had a very wet spring and this lets them wrap things up.” But even when temperatures are nice, rainy days still are not an ideal time for workers to be out on the road, …

News Nearby: I-79 Roadwork Causing Traffic Woes

Weekend work diverting more cars onto secondary roads.

Lane restrictions on Interstate 79 appear to be causing traffic headaches on secondary roads being used as unofficial detours. Washington Pike in South Fayette was bumper-to-bumper for miles Saturday as traffic appeared to be trying to bypass the nearly 4-mile construction zone on I-79 that extends from the Washington County line to Bridgeville exit. Meanwhile, more traffic clogged Route 50 near Chartiers Valley Shopping Center as construction continues on that stretch of roadway. PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said motorists are encouraged to leave the interstate if they can find different routes to their destinations. Cars were also bumper-to-bumper along the interstate construction zone, especially near the Bridgeville exit. “If people …

When working on a 1 mile stretch of road, why is it necessary to restrict traffic 5 miles in both directions from the work site? Is there anyone in PennDot that has a brain? Coordinate work areas!   more ›
