I remember the morning of 9/11/01 as a sunny Tuesday—quick to turn dismal. A student at J.E. Harrison Middle School in Whitehall, I was in eighth grade, first period social studies with Mr. Housteau. The day began like any other, until our teacher was notified of "a second World Trade Center bombing." Soon after, we had all figured out what really happened, increasingly confused, shocked and saddened. The rest of the morning, into the afternoon, was much of a blur. Like those alive the day JFK was assassinated, everyone remembers what they were doing on Sept. 11, 2001. I was at home rocking my three-week-old son, as I watched in terror and confusion the surreal images on every television channel. I, like many new mothers at the time, wondered what kind of a world I’d brought my child into and I feared life would never feel normal or safe again in our country. We’d been violently thrust into a new era for which we weren’t ready. I felt such fear and I wasn’t even a person actually living the tragedy or one of the family members who lost a loved one on that ill-fated day. I was in the Navy - on the USS George Washington aircraft carrier. Our ship was doing exercises in the Atlantic; but, that evening we travelled north and on September 12, we were right off the coast of Long Island. There was still a great amount of smoke coming from the towers.   more ›
