Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in Peters Township?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Peters Township and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its …

Today is Cyber Monday, the day that people who did not find all their holiday gifts over the Black Friday weekend turn to the Internet for other shopping deals. Scammers try to prey on Cyber Monday bargain hunters by advertising "one day only" promotions from recognized brands. Consumers should be on the watch for too good to be true emails from unrecognized websites. In advance of the holiday season, the FBI reminds shoppers to beware of cyber criminals and their aggressive and creative ways to steal money and personal information. Scammers use many techniques to fool potential victims including fraudulent auction sales, reshipping merchandise purchased with a stolen credit card, sale of fraudulent or stolen gift cards through auction …

Excitement, experience and sales draw shoppers to South Hills Village.
Linda Book arrived at South Hills Village at 3:30 a.m. with a plan. By 4:45 a.m., she had the shopping bags to prove her plan was working. “We’re here to get the best buys of the season,” Book said. “(The stores) have regular sales, which is great, but we want the really good ones.” She and her nieces, Maria and Amanda, all of Whitehall, admitted that Black Friday shopping is a little crazy. But it’s also fun, they said. It’s a challenge to get the best deals—and they insisted it’s well worth it. The family was pretty pleased with the sales they found, mainly at clothing stores. They weren’t the only early birds to flock to the mall at a time when some people are just crawling into bed, and others have been asleep for hours. Lindsey …

The store is opening in a new location after closing its former Upper St. Clair location in the spring.
A new Pier 1 Imports store is scheduled to open its doors in Upper St. Clair on Monday, Oct. 31. The store is located in the top level of the former Border's Bookstore. It's in the same complex as Louis Anthony Jewelers and The Pie Place. Pier 1 Imports was previously located at 1630 Washington Road, next to the Chick-fil-A. Trader Joe's now occupies that space. "Following the closing of our previous location, we knew we wanted to maintain our presence in the South Hills," said Jennifer Engstrand, Pier 1 Imports media specialist, in an email to Upper St. Clair Patch. "The new store will be bigger than the old store and will feature new fixtures, lighting and flooring that will be completely different visually from any of the other stores …

I love our local small businesses but I live on the southern edge of Peters, just off of Rt19, and find that I am taking the backroads to avoid the traffic insanity on 19. So I am bypassing most of those small businesses. Perhaps it's time for these businesses to start squawking loudly about the traffic and the resulting inconvenience to their potential customers.   more ›
