Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in Peters Township?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Peters Township and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its …

No, there's not a catch. SCORE's experienced mentors will help you to take your business to the next level.
When it comes down to it, behind just about every small business is an entrepreneur hoping to turn his or her passion into a paycheck. But, as many wise business advisers have noted, hope is not a strategy. Business owners need support to turn dreams into reality. That's why Patch is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), a nonprofit organization with 12,000 business experts nationwide who provide free mentoring to small business owners. The partnership makes sense because we believe that, when local commerce grows, the whole community gets stronger. Patch already provides free listings for local businesses and other tools to help build local brands. Whether you're a 10-year-old jewelry …

The boutique retails fine alpaca clothing—including baby items—as well as eco-friendly jeans.
A few weeks ago, Premier Boutique opened its doors to the Peters Township community selling luxury items made of alpaca. The shop occupies the space where Maggie's Hardware used to be—on Route 19 (3328 Washington Road). Boutique owner Debbie Harden has owned and operated West Penn Alpacas in Claysville for nearly 16 years—approximately 200 Huacaya and Suri alpacas complete the herd on her 60-acre farm. Diving into what she didn’t realize would become such a passion, her father suggested she start an alpaca farm for the tax break and the chance to stay at home with her five children. She now operates an alpaca auction company, and was a founding partner in the Eastern Extreme Auction. The boutique exudes Harden’s obvious passion for fine …

'There’s not a time you can’t grow into a new version of yourself. You’re never done learning.' - Carol Teodori, owner.
Combining nutritional, physical, and spiritual education is old hat for Carol Teodori, owner of Changing Seasons Center for Conscious Living, a holistic learning center in Peters Township dedicated to the well-being of the human spirit and the natural world. Teodori returned to Peters Township from New Jersey where she was the spiritual director at a hospital with an interest in holistic health, and brought her dream to life with the holistic education center, Changing Seasons. Minutes from the high school, tucked away on quiet Cedar Hill Drive, the Changing Seasons building is a peaceful, healthy haven within the hustle and bustle of our community that is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the relationship between …
Ryan Quinn hopes his "superb owl" commercial will be chosen by Doritos to air during the big game.
What began as a joke with one fan’s Super Bowl party invitation has turned into a television commercial that might be used by Doritos. Ryan Quinn, a 2006 Chartiers Valley graduate, wrote and directed a 30-second video that he hopes will be chosen by Doritos as a Super Bowl ad. It begins with the party’s host wondering why all of his guests are bringing owls to his apartment, only to realize he made an unfortunate typo on the invitations: Each guest was invited to a SUPERB OWL Party. *CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE COMMERCIAL* Quinn, who lives in Scott Township and runs a small film company, sent out similar invitations last year, but decided this year to turn it into a humorous commercial. Countless people have submitted videos, which Doritos …

Black Friday shoppers descended on malls everywhere yesterday, but in Dormont, a different venue was getting all the attention. The Hollywood Theater hosted Ian Petrella, who played “Randy Parker” in the classic Christmas film “A Christmas Story.” Petrella said he enjoys touring smaller towns, and has had the best audience responses in the midwest and eastern parts of the country because those towns seem similar to the movie setting. It’s always fun to meet the people who helped make the film such a success, he said. “It’s interesting because we went, we made (the movie), and kind of nothing came of it after that,” Petrella said. “It’s kind of like summer camp, the way I remember it. It’s a bizarre thing to go through sometimes.” Hollywood…

With Small Business Saturday coming this weekend, you can help drive feet—and wallets—to your favorite independent business.
You might be the type who finds sleeping on a freezing sidewalk for the best Black Friday deals exciting. Or perhaps you've already started working out your mouse-clicking finger for Cyber Monday. But if neither scenario appeals to you, there is an alternative—Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday, conceived by American Express to help spotlight the efforts of local small businesses, comes at the beginning of the big holiday shopping sprint—this Saturday—and encourages shoppers not to bypass Main Street for the mega-mall. Peters Patch would love to hear which small businesses you can't live without in Peters Township. Tell us in the comments which independently owned business is a must for shoppers this Saturday and why. Your …
