Hearing for South Hills Village Bomb Scare Suspect Ends With Tears

Frank Zahler is accused of telling a man in Barnes & Noble that he had bomb materials in his briefcase similar to the bombs used in the Boston Marathon.

The elderly man accused of causing the evacuation of South Hills Village mall last month was in tears apologizing to the judge and thanking the Bethel Park police for treating him well at the end of his preliminary hearing on Monday. District Judge Robert Wyda continued the hearing for Frank Zahler until July 1 so that behavioral health specialists could help Zahler discover the underlying cause of why he made the "callous and stupid" remarks on April 21, just days after the Boston Marathon tragedy. "What you said was clearly wrong," Wyda told Zahler. "We need to get things mentally and emotionally under control. "You need to continue to work with these people (health specialists) to help you help yourself." Zahler was handcuffed in the …

South Hills Village Hosts 2013 YMCA Healthy Kids Day

The free event is Saturday, April 27.

Take on summer with YMCA's Healthy Kids Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at South Hills Village. The free community event encourages attendees to move, learn and live healthier. Families can come and have a blast in a big bouncy house, run through a preschool obstacle course, get cool giveaways and South Hills YMCA program and class offering information, watch a Kang's Karate demonstration and take part in fun activities provided by the Bethel Park Library and other local organizations. Bethel Park Police Investigate Suspicious Package at South Hills Village

A witness tells Patch he saw a man get taken into custody at Red Robin.

Bethel Park police evacuated South Hills Village mall, Carmike 10 and surrounding restaurants Sunday night after a man claimed he had bomb-making material in his briefcase. South Hills Village released the following statement at 10:30 p.m. Sunday: The local authorities have confirmed that there is no longer a threat, and the mall is now safe for our customers, tenants and employees. We will re-open for business tomorrow at 10 a.m., regular business hours. A man went into Barnes & Noble around 6:15 p.m. Sunday and stated he had bomb-making material in his briefcase. The Peters Township Middle School book fair is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Barnes & Noble at South Hills Village. New Store Opens in South Hills Village Friday

And a new spot soon will be 'popping' up in the food court.

A burst of color is coming to the South Hills Village Friday, April 12, as the popular accessories boutique Vera Bradley opens on the lower level south wing. The new store will offer its vibrant signature handbags, accessories and special collections, and will have special grand opening promotions and store offers for a limited time. In other changes in the mall, Sassy’s Nail Spa is now open in its newly-renovated location with a sparkling, contemporary design on the upper level near Dick’s Sporting Goods. LoveSac is remodeling its current location on the lower level near the play area and will unveil its fresh new look later this spring.   Claire’s will also be moving to its new location on the upper level near Macy’s later in the year. …

'Caring Bunny' Comes to South Hills Village

The mall will open early for families that have children with special needs.

The "Caring Bunny" will hop on over to South Hills Village from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 24 in the lower level north court. Caring Bunny is a special event dedicated to families that have children with special needs, providing a subdued environment to visit this year’s bunny photo experience. Many steps will be taken to reduce sensory triggers, creating a more comforting environment for the children’s magical visit with the Bunny during this event. Flash Mob Breaks Out at South Hills Village

The dancing attracted a large crowd.

A large crowd gathered at the Target/Dick's end of South Hills Village Sunday afternoon as a flash mob broke out. A few girls in pink T-shirts began to beautifully dance as music started blasting from nearby speakers. Then, all of the sudden, dozens of kids ripped off their jackets to display their matching pink T-shirts and joined in on the dance.  The participants were South Park Middle School students. Their flash mob was part of their Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. The program teaches children about kindness and caring, teaching children to stand up to bullies and help other students in need. South Hills Target Almost Ready To Open

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned early March.

The new Target at South Hills Village will open its doors for the first time on March 5, according to a Target official. The evening event is invitation only. The store will then have a soft opening on March 6 and a grand opening on March 10. There are still about 30 to 50 positions Target officials are looking to fill, according to WTAE. Anyone who's interested in a job should apply at Target.com/careers.
