Valley Brook Intersection Closes Wednesday

It will be the most significant road shutdown in Peters Township since the Valley Brook and East McMurray intersection project.

The time has come. The Valley Brook and Washington roads project is set to begin Wednesday, May 22. The construction will not wrap up until July 2014, at the earliest. The project will result in Valley Brook Road being closed just west of St. Petersburg Center, meaning access to Old Washington will be closed and vehicles will not be able to go under Route 19.  Through traffic on Route 19 itself will be minimally impeded during the construction. The official detours are Boyce Road from Route 19 to Mayview Road and East McMurray Road from Valley Brook tor Route 19. More than 11,000 vehicle trips per day will be displaced.  "This will be the most significant road shutdown the township has seen since the Valley Brook and East McMurray …

I am sure the improvement is much needed and will improve traffic flow considerably when completed. I am particularly pleased with the bridge connecting the trail. A concern I have is the absence of sidewalks along McMurray. How can we have two schools (with how many students?) without sidewalks? I sincerely hope with adding thousands of cars a day there are additional police officers to aid with…   more ›

Valley Brook, Route 19 Construction Expected to Cause Bus Delays for Peters Students

The construction begins Wednesday.

Peters Township school officials are warning district parents that upcoming construction of Valley Brook Road and state Route 19 could cause bus delays for students. Construction, which will entail the closing of that intersection as well as sections of Old Washington Road, is slated to begin Wednesday. "The district has been preparing for these changes in cooperation with the township and families whose bus stops must be moved have already been personally contacted by the transportation department," school officials noted. Because of the detours and increased traffic in other parts of the township, district officials said they do expect to experience delays on most of its bus routes when construction begins. "We appreciate your patience …

Peters Council Approves New Interim Stop Sign

The interim move is to help control traffic when the Valley Brook intersection closes next week.

Peters Township Council approved the installation of an interim stop sign at the intersection of Rock Run Road southbound and Proffer Road, according to The Almanac. Council members hope the sign will help control traffic when the Valley Brook Road and Route 19 intersection closes on May 22.  Township Manager Michael Silvestri also proposed stop signs along Gallery Drive northbound and on Stonebrook Drive facing Hoover Lane, however, the council did not approve the motions, according to the report. Council stated it will review other signs as needed. Members felt that implementing all of them prior to the closure was premature, but did not rule our other signs, Silvestri said. Put as many stop signs as you want - does not matter, no one follows them....just sit at the intersection of Valley Brook and Bebout...everyone is always in a hurry...riding bumpers, thinking about stopping in the mind...with all of the new Southpointe traffic coming through Peters...we need more police to stop the horrible driving, not stop signs. Please give Peters Police use of Radar/Lazer...…   more ›

Why would you want to tie Arrowhead to Route 19? Are you suggesting adding a bike lane to Route 19? Of all the places I would prefer to NOT ride a bike or walk, Route 19 -as currently constructed - is pretty high on that list.   more ›

Committee Kickoff Sparks Future Growth of Peters

Idyllic landscape, rural character, home building boom. Chosen community leaders plan to engage with the public on what's next for Peters Township.

Members of a newly formed committee convened Tuesday night at Peters Township Community Recreation Center for the first of many meetings focused on the future of PT. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Planning Director Ed Zuk, regarding the initial meeting—part of a 14-month process. By law, the municipality is required to update its plan every 10 years—according to the PA Municipalities Planning Code (PA MPC).  Previously, eight Steering Committee members were chosen following an interview process, as well as two appointees from township departments. Hired consultants and township officials led the conversation Tuesday with an overview of what a comprehensive plan is; why it’s important; their current approach; the vision and …

Gateway Rehab Moves, Celebrates Grand Opening

Gateway Rehab South moved a few blocks to 375 Valley Brook Rd. in McMurray.

Gateway Rehab South hasn't left Peters Township. The rehabilitation center recently moved a few blocks to a roomier facility at 375 Valley Brook Rd. "We're still here to serve," said Nancy Lewis, public relations for Gateway Rehab. "And parking is not a problem." "We love the new building. It's so bright and cheery. It's good for patients," said Sally Child, adolescent therapist and Upper St. Clair resident. The facility celebrated its grand opening Tuesday with tours, refreshments and speaker Dr. Abraham Twerski, founder of Gateway Rehab. Twerski opened the first Gateway Rehab center in 1972 while he was serving as clinical director of St. Francis Hospital's department of psychiatry. He said there was no place in Pittsburgh to help …
