New Chief County Detective Named

He was introduced to the Washington County Commissioners Thursday.

Washington County District Attorney Eugene A. Vittone on Thursday announced that James McElhaney will be assuming the job of chief county detective effective immediately.  McElhaney replaces J. Michael Aaron, who retired earlier this month. He will oversee all the detectives operating in the Washington County District Attorneys Office, including the District Attorney Drug Task Force and the Special Victim Investigation and Prosecution Unit. These detectives assist with major crime, homicide and narcotic investigations.  McElhaney was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, where he served as a military policeman. DA to Seek Death Penalty Against Jordan Clemons

The Washington County District Attorney will seek the death penalty against the man accused of killing Karissa Kunco in January.

The Washington County District Attorney will seek the death penalty against Jordan Clemons, the man accused of killing Karissa Kunco, according to a report by the Washington Observer-Reporter. Kunco, a Baldwin resident and Brookline native, was killed in January. Her body was found in Mt. Pleasant Township in Washington County. Clemons was arraigned Tuesday on criminal homicide charges, as well as several charges stemming from other unrelated incidents, according to the report. UPDATED: Coroner Rules E. Finley Death Homicide; Suspect in Custody

Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said Sunday that Opal M. Bedillion died from a knife wound—and ruled her death a homicide.

Washington County Coroner Tim Warco on Sunday ruled the death of an East Finley woman found dead in her home by family members as a homicide—and police said at a press conference that a suspect is in custody. Warco pronounced Opal M. Bedillion, 80, dead at 3:37 a.m. Sunday. A news release from his office indicates she died from a knife wound. The Observer-Reporter newspaper reported that Frank Russell Jones Jr., 23, of 122 Willow Road, Claysville has been charged with homicide. Online court records show that Jones was arraigned by district Judge Curtis Thompson on homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, theft, receiving stolen property and possession of a weapon charges. Former Peters Massage Parlor Employee Admitted to ARD Program

Jianhua "LiLi" Li was admitted to the 12-month Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program by Washington County Judge Paul Pozonsky.

She Mei Ma, 44, of Aspinwall, and Jianhua “Lili” Li, 47, of Flushing, N.Y., were arrested in July by Washington County detectives, accused of making unsolicited contact with the genitals of two undercover detectives.  The Almanac reports Li was admitted to the first-time offenders program Dec. 14 on charges of prostitution and indecent assault. Each women were charged with prostitution from an operation at the Golden Phoenix Chinese Massage parlor, located in Ace Plaza on Route 19. In July, District Attorney Steven Toprani's office received a complaint from a neighboring business owner of suspect activity at the massage parlor. It's Vittone by a Hair!

Unofficial vote totals show Vittone edging DiCarlo by 165 votes.

In what may be the closet race for Washington County District Attorney in decades, Republican Gene Vittone has won the race, according to unofficial results, to fill the seat being vacated by Steve Toprani. With all 184 precincts reporting, Vittone has an unofficial vote total of 20,661 or 50.2 percent to Democrat David DiCarlo, with 20,486 or 49.8 percent. Unofficial vote totals show Vittone edging DiCarlo by 165 votes. Not since a district attorney’s race between Herman J. Bigi and the late John Pettit in the 1970s has a race for the office been this close in Washington County. The final election results were not determined at that time for weeks because of recounts.
