The American Cancer Society and West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) invite Pittsburgh-area residents to participate in a historic, nationwide study that will provide valuable information needed to fight the war against cancer and save lives. Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) is designed to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause cancer. "Lilly Oncology on Canvas," an exhibition of art by people diagnosed with cancer, their families, friends and caregivers, is on display at the West Penn Allegheny Health System Outpatient Care Center in Peters Township through Friday. This free public exhibit, on tour in communities nationwide, showcases select pieces of art from the 2011 "Lilly Oncology on Canvas" competition. The artwork expresses—visually and through narrative—the life-affirming changes that give meaning to the cancer journey. Spring sessions for Tai Chi for Arthritis at the Outpatient Care Center in McMurray—160 Gallery Drive—are scheduled to start March 14. This six-week program is designed to help individuals suffering from arthritis relieve pain and swelling with exercise and meditation, a release states. The heart and liver transplantation programs at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) are among the nation’s best in patient care quality, according to the latest report by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). West Penn Allegheny Health System’s nationally recognized Department of Radiation Oncology has opened a new, comprehensive cancer treatment program at the health system’s Outpatient Care Center in Peters Township. Patients with all types of cancers and certain benign conditions can now be treated at the Outpatient Care Center in a state-of-the-art radiation facility run by some of the region’s preeminent cancer specialists. Two free workshops will introduce participants to the movements of Tai Chi and explain why this combination of exercise and meditation is ideal for those coping with arthritis pain and swelling.
