National Pet Day is Thursday, April 11, and what better time to care for your critter? Or perhaps this is the right time to adopt a new pet. According to petdayusa.com, the day was started by celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige in order "to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters all across the nation." The 13th annual Peters Fishing Derby is right around the corner! Traditionally held at Peters Lake Park, the derby is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11. The event, hosted by the McMurray Rotary Club and Peters Township Community Recreation Center, is open to youngsters—boys and girls—in kindergarten through fifth grade. Last year, approximately 60 children were registered for the event prior to the big day, and even more signed up day-of. Awards are given for First Fish Caught, Most Fish Caught, Smallest Fish Caught and Largest Fish Caught. All participants will receive a door prize.
