Art Students Cheerfully Paint Care Center's Windows

Peters Township High School art honors volunteers embellished the Outpatient Care Center’s windows with holiday scenes Thursday.

Twenty-three Peters Township High School art honors students toted their skills and paintbrushes to the Outpatient Care Center Thursday for a fun field trip. Holiday spirit filled the air, as did Christmas music playing simultaneously from iPod to iPod. Two weeks ago, Acacia Svonavec, community marketing manager at Canonsburg General Hospital, approached the classrooms about the idea. “Each year, where I grew up (in Confluence, Pa.) we had a fall festival and 10 to 15 local businesses would paint holiday themes on the windows,” Svonavec said. “It was such a nice idea for the season. It’s a situation where everybody wins.” High school art teachers Marguerite Kazalas and Kristin DeGiovanni surveyed the activity as students adorned the clear …

Guard Your Teeth When Going Swimming

Low pool pH levels can lead to tooth enamel erosion.

Frequent swimmers are likely all too familiar with some of the adverse effects that come as a result from spending too much time in the pool. The dry skin, discolored hair and distinct chlorine smell are obvious giveaways that someone spent their day in the pool. Dentists from the New York University College of Dentistry have added one more feature to that list: eroded tooth enamel. In a recent study, the dentists analyzed the case of a 52-year-old man who had complained about sensitive teeth, dark tooth staining and enamel loss that set on quickly and lasted for only a few months. The only explanation the dentists could determine was the man’s newly adopted 90-minute daily swimming routine. “Tooth enamel erosion can occur in swimming …

According to a recent study conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, underage males visit the emergency room twice as much during the Fourth of July weekend than at any time during the rest of the month. The study analyzed national government statistics from 2009, and found that emergency rooms in the United States saw a daily average of more than 940 visits related to underage drinking throughout the holiday weekend of July 3-5, 2009. Two-thirds of those visits were from boys. Jonathan Landis, MD, medical director of Canonsburg …
