Giant Eagle Stores Requiring Advantage Card for Self-Checkout Lanes

Customers have to scan their card before proceeding through the self checkout.

Giant Eagle stores are now requiring that shoppers using self-checkout lanes have a store loyalty card. The Post-Gazette reports the supermarket chain recently began rolling out technology in its stores requiring a Giant Eagle Advantage Card for anyone using self-checkout lanes.  The technology prompts customers to scan their Advantage Card before proceeding to scan items for purchase. In the past, anyone could use the self-check out aisles regardless of loyalty card status. Dick Roberts, Giant Eagle spokesman, told the newspaper that requiring an Advantage Card ensures that customers are receiving weekly specials, GetGo fuelperks, cash register coupon offers and other savings. This move also allows the store to contact customers if there …

People leave items at checkout all the time, items that need to be returned to the shelves. So your cart of items would just blend with all the other things people leave, deciding at the checkout they don't want. BTW, nobody will know …   more ›

Observing Passover in Peters Township: What You Need to Know

Here is a list of resources, events and services in honor of the Jewish observance.

It's almost time to break out the matzo. Passover arrives on March 25 this year, when Jews across the world will come together to retell the Exodus story over four cups of wine (or grape juice for those who can't indulge), and of course, a large, festive feast. Passover Traditions As the story goes, during their flight from slavery, the Jews did not have enough time for their dough to rise, resulting in a flaky cracker that is eaten instead of bread for a full week during Passover. The diet changes go beyond bread, however, and depend on family tradition. As a general rule, just look for the "Kosher for Passover" label, which, thankfully, spreads to more products year after year. Prior to the observance, Jews clean their homes and get rid …

I'm sorry this happened but I have to admit, I'm not surprised. I'm in that shopping center every day and I'm amazed at all the people who have stepped right out in front of my car without even looking to see if there were any cars coming before they crossed the street. It's just assumed that if there is a car, that they will stop.   more ›

Crews Hard at Work Cleaning Up Flood Aftermath

Peters Township Manager Michael Silvestri said crews will be working on a number of affected areas through Saturday.

Overnight, strong storms rolled through western Pennsylvania hitting Washington County and Peters Township—perhaps the hardest.  "It's a big deal," said Peters Township Manager Michael Silvestri.  In one hour, public works director Pete Overcashier told him the area received an inch and a half of rain (and some hail), he said.  A number of areas were impacted due to catch basins filling up with debris.  Crews will continue working overtime tomorrow to clean up, Silvestri said.  "There has been a number of streets needing clean up," he said. "Inverness, the Heritage Meadows plan, Fawn Valley, Center Church Road and more." A tree was reported down at McCombs Road—crews reopened the road Friday morning.  "We have quite a few properties which …
