As Peters Township School District continues its safety preparedness efforts, Pleasant Valley Elementary School will be conducting an emergency lockdown drill on Monday. This drill will take place at approximately 2 p.m. Just as the district conducts monthly fire drills and annual severe weather drills, this lockdown drill is done bi-annually to ensure the school practices and reflects upon each experience. "Reflection is our way of ensuring we are prepared if the need for a lockdown should ever arise," a district spokeswoman said. Eighty students were recognized at Pleasant Valley Elementary this week for their original stories. Students kindergarten through third grade had the opportunity to write and illustrate their own books for their classmates to read. The books were labeled and will now be available for other students to check out of the library and enjoy. Peters Township School District officials have cancelled afternoon kindergarten for Pleasant Valley Elementary students due to a power outage. Bower Hill Elementary kindergarten will go on as scheduled Wednesday afternoon. More than 1,300 West Penn Power customers are without power in Peters Township due to the morning's severe storm. Editor's Note: This article was updated at 1:10 p.m. A Peters Township School District spokeswoman announced that all Peters Township schools will be dismissed 45 minutes early Friday. Jan. 25. High school students will be dismissed at 1:40 p.m.; middle school students at 2:15 p.m.; and elementary students at 2:45 p.m. "Parents should be aware that we anticipate longer than normal bus rides and while specific arrival tiems may be hard to predict, students may be arriving home earlier than normal. Staff members will remain at the schools with car riders until all students are picked up," according to a news release. Halloween fun for a good cause.
Peters Township High School National Honor Society and Students Against Drugs raised $1,700 for the Washington City Mission with their annual Haunted Hallways. The event was held on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at Pleasant Valley Elementary. The organizations were happy to provide a safe place for young children to celebrate Halloween and raise money for a worthy cause at the same time. A 9-year-old Peters Township student athlete is changing the lives of those in need across the world one pair at a time.
The power of open-mindedness and awareness can lead to changing the world—and one local boy is continuing his quest to do so. A 9-year-old Peters Township student read a story about orphans in Haiti playing sports with hockey sticks and baseball bats, but no shoes. Since August 2010, Stephen Shilling has collected and donated 5,554 pairs of shoes—and counting. The soon-to-be fourth-grader at McMurray Elementary said he came up with the idea of a shoe drive, and on the first day collected 61 pairs of shoes with the help of friends and youth football teammates. Celebrate the arts and music as Peters Township School District’s Imagination Celebration returns this weekend. District officials say much has been planned and it's better than ever. The event, benefitting the district’s fine art and music programs, gives students an opportunity to showcase their talents, and mingle with friends and families in an effort to celebrate their accomplishments and each other. “This event has students’ work from all grades represented,” said Donna Fox, orchestra teacher, musical director, music department facilitator and event co-coordinator. Crews will begin paving the road leading to the Pleasant Valley Elementary parent parking lot and athletic complex today. The road around Pleasant Valley will remain open and access will be provided to the parent parking lot throughout the day. Please allow for extra time when visiting the building as access to the lot may be restricted at times. Road work is expected to last three days during this phase. At a later date, additional lot closures may occur, according to the Peters Township School District. Stay tuned to Patch for those dates. I agree with you Roger. Our family personally makes the effort to enroll our kids in some summer reading and math courses. I do not think many folks here do that.
