Township manager Jerry Andree says facility still is far from a done deal.
Plans are in the infancy stage for the Pittsburgh Penguins to partner with UPMC on a cutting edge performance center and practice rink in Cranberry. "It's really going to be a one-of-the-kind in the country," said Penguins spokesman Tom McMillan. The proposed 150,000 square foot complex would be located in the Cranberry Woods business park off Route 228—near the newly-opened Hilton Garden Inn—and offer hockey-related training and injury treatment and prevention. McMillan said the facility would be similar in nature to the UPMC sports performance complex on Pittsburgh's South Side, which is used by the Steelers and the University of Pittsburgh and includes sports medicine, practice and training facilities. With its attachment to an NHL team…

Peters Township husband and wife Anthony and Domenica Merante are opening the modern Italian market in North Strabane this spring.
A new market is opening, and it isn’t a name you won’t recognize. Pasquale Merante opened the first Merante Italian family market in Oakland in 1905, which continues to operate today. Now, Peters Township residents Anthony (grandson of Pasquale) and Domenica Merante are bringing the beloved grocery—and more—to the area this spring. The husband and wife team said the mission of Merante Brothers Market is to bring the neighborhood store back to the neighborhood, but with a modern flair. “We’re offering drive-thru amenities, a takeout window, more items to choose from and more room to enjoy—and parking,” Domenica Merante told Patch. She said the family is aiming to provide the product that Italian neighborhood specialty stores used to have…

Peters Township picked up its fifth win of the season over the now 1-6 Seneca Valley Raiders on Monday night.
The Peters Township Indians picked up their fifth win of the season over the now 1-6 Seneca Valley Raiders on Monday night by a score of 3-2. The Indians finally seemed to play together in the early going of the contest. The squad made frequent, easy passes from stick to stick, taunting the helpless Raider defense. Taylor Cox forced numerous shots on net early but to no avail. With just under 11 minutes in the first period, Cox took a boarding penalty, leaving the Indians shorthanded. During the penalty kill, Sophomore Patrick Hannan dazzled past defenders and fooled the goaltender, putting the team up 1-0. Hannan sparkled all night long, deking out defenders and showing just how good he is with the puck on his stick. Toward the end of the…

The Indians defeated the Trojans 10-1 Monday night.
Wins are always a good thing, especially when they come in the season home opener. The Peters Township Indians were able to get a win with a big exclamation point Monday night as they opened the 2011-12 season with a 10-0 pasting of Erie McDowell at the Iceoplex at Southpointe. The win improved the Indians’ season record to 2-0-1, after having tied North Allegheny and defeating Butler on the road to start their first season of AAA hockey. Cole Snyder scored four goals in the game while Davan Groom also scored the three-goal hat trick. Patrick Hannan and T.J. Skraitz each had four assists for the evening. The Indians jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the contest, but saw McDowell tie the score moments later. The Indians added four more …

State Trooper Joe Christy made no bones about police officers stopping speeding motorists on Interstate 79. With two “radar speed trailers” set up in both directions near the Southpointe exit, Christy noted speeding motorists were given fair warning to slow down. “It’s a little bit different in the sense we don’t have two speed trailers out,” Christy said of Wednesday’s aggressive driving sting with state police and PennDOT. “They’re given the opportunity to slow down. (If they don’t), then we have a trooper for enforcement since you didn’t get it on the first two opportunities.” State troopers from Allegheny and Washington counties were actively patrolling a stretch of Interstate 79 between Bridgeville and Southpointe in an effort to get …
