Local Baby Is First of 2013

The baby is named after family members who came to America on the Mayflower, according to Dad.

Alden William Johnson was the first baby born in 2013 at St. Clair Hospital. Alden arrived at 8:26 a.m.—four days after his due date—and weighed a whopping 11 pounds, 3 ounces. "It's exciting, 1-1-13, it's definitely memorable. It's totally not what we were expecting," said Alden's father, John Johnson. "The nurses were excited, too. Especially with him being such a big baby." John said he and mom, Jessica Johnson, might have been a bit more nervous than the average first-time parents. They are both nurses. "Well we know more than most people, so we get nervous. But everything went well. No problems," John said. John and Jessica have been married for five years and were neighbors as they grew up in Washington County. The name Alden William…

Whatever happened to the plan to control the traffic lights from Waterdam through Peters? I can get on 19N at Waterdam and hit EVERY red light from there to Valley Brook at a low traffic time like 7AM on a Sunday morning. Ridiculous, intolerable, inexcusable.   more ›

St. Clair Hospital Wins National Award

The Mt. Lebanon hospital was named by Reuters as one of the Top 100 institutions in the country.

St. Clair Hospital officials are celebrating an independent study that named it one of the Top-100 hospitals in the country. The Thomson Reuters study named St. Clair as one of the top Large Community Hospitals after weighing its performance in mortality, patient satisfaction, cost-efficiency and other factors. The only other hospital in this area to be named to the list was Allegheny General Hospital, which scored high marks as a Major Teaching Institution. The study has been conducted since 1993 and evaluates nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country. “From a national perspective, it’s nice to be included in the company of such prestigious hospitals,” said Michael Flanagan, who is the hospital’s senior vice president and chief operating …

Dr. Terrence Gilbert, the medical director for St. Clair Hospital’s inpatient and hospitalist programs, was named as one of “Pittsburgh’s 50 Finest” in trying to raise money for the fight against cystic fibrosis. Gilbert and 49 other people from around the region–including Peters Patch editor Andrea Bosco–are each trying to raise $2,500 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The fundraising drive began Thursday, March 29, and continues until the celebratory gala on Aug. 16. “Obviously, to be considered one of the ‘50 Finest’ is a great honor,” Gilbert said. “Plus to be part of such a great organization and help raise money for that, it’s a great cause.” Gilbert, who lives in Upper St. Clair, said he’s eager to raise money to help fight the …

St. Clair Hospital to Break Ground in Peters

Construction of the 40,000-square-foot outpatient facility will begin following today's groundbreaking.

Peters Township has become the medical mecca of the South Hills in recent years and today St. Clair Hospital is breaking ground on its outpatient facility along Route 19 at 3:30 p.m.  With construction originally scheduled to start last summer, the $20 million, 40,000-square-foot facility is now ready to go up. The building, located at 3928 Washington Road, is set to face Route 19 with a green buffer of landscaping between the road and the facility—complete with 180 spaces of parking behind, creating "a more aesthetically-pleasing" look, we reported last May.  The two-story building will be built near Donaldson's Crossroads, at the site of the former Al Lorenzi Building Products.  According to last year's reports, the Mt. Lebanon hospital …

News Nearby: Police Investigate Attempted Child Luring

A 12-year-old girl in Mt. Lebanon said a man asked her to get into his truck.

Mt. Lebanon police are investigating an attempted child luring in a neighborhood near St. Clair Hospital. The 12-year-old Jefferson Middle School sixth grader told Upper St. Clair Patch she was near the intersection of Pinewood and Maplewood drives when she heard a vehicle squeal behind her. She said an older man in a white truck asked her where she lived and said he'd give her a ride home. The victim said she had a bad feeling in her stomach and took off running through the neighborhood backyards until she got to her house. "I just ran away as fast as I could," she said. Her father was watching television when she came to the back door banging. "I was like oh my gosh and I was so scared and the cops came," she said. "She had this look of …

Missing Dog Returns Home After 6-Month Adventure

A Mt. Lebanon family found their collie-shepherd mix in Beechview after she ran away six months ago.

When Jami Estabrook’s beloved dog named Molly escaped from her Mt. Lebanon home last August, she did everything in her power to find her. Estabrook scoured the area in her car, put up 400 “Lost Dog” fliers from Bridgeville to Bethel Park and even knocked on doors to see if her collie-shepherd mix with long black hair was wandering around their neighborhoods. Despite numerous close calls and apparent sightings between Mt. Lebanon’s Rec Center and St. Clair Hospital, she could never catch up with the elusive Molly. Even one of her traps only turned up an angry raccoon. But after six months of searching, she never gave up hope that her dog would appear alive. Then, the day after posting one last bit of information on her Facebook page, she …
