Standing beneath the wings of a C-130 aircraft at the 911th Airlift Wing, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said he would work with Pennsylvania's federal lawmakers to fight renewed plans to close the Moon Township air base. Corbett, appearing alongside Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and state Sen. Matt Smith, D-Mt. Lebanon, implored military officials and federal lawmakers to end efforts to close the 911th as a cost-saving measure. Open Secrets has published a list of recipients of National Rifle Association campaign contributions that also includes outgoing U.S. Reps. Mark Critz of Johnstown and Jason Altmire of McCandless, both Democrats.
U.S. Reps Tom Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair), Mark Critz (D-Johnstown), Jason Altmire (D-McCandless) and Mike Kelly (R-Butler) of Pennsylvania accepted thousands in 2012 campaign contributions from the National Rifle Association, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The NRA doled out more than $750,000 in campaign contributions in 2012, according to the center, a research organization that tracks money in politics and how it affects elections and policies and shares the information on OpenSecrets.org. The center obtained its data from the Federal Election Commission. Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas D. Checque, 28, a highly decorated Navy SEAL, died of combat related injuries sustained Dec. 8 while supporting operations in Afghanistan. WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, VA, reports that Checque, a highly-decorated combat veteran, was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare command. The Department of Defense confirmed that Checque was from Monroeville but currently lived in Virginia Beach, Va. Checque was among the special forces team assigned to rescue an American doctor who had been abducted in Afghanistan. Murphy credits his win to knowing the needs of southwestern Pennsylvania.
It's official. U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair) will serve a sixth term. Murphy declared victory around 10:15 p.m. against retired state police trooper and current Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi, a Democrat. In his victory speech, Murphy credited the win to understanding the needs of southwestern Pennsylvania. He called his team from Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. to join him on the stage and thanked them. Also joining Murphy on stage was his wife, daughter and daughter's fiance. The good news is that ads will end after Tuesday. The bad news is Election Day is still two days away.
As we head into the last few days before the election, the campaign ads seem never ending. But do they influence voters or turn them off? Some people hang on to those ads which agree with their viewpoint but others just seem to be grating if you don't have a similar viewpoint. Many seem to be negative ads against the opponent rather than ones that point out the attributes of the candidate. So, you tell us. A TV debate between U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and Democratic challenger Larry Maggi aired on PCNC Tuesday night and got heated when discussing whether Maggi supports President Barack Obama and his health care bill. When Murphy said Maggi "supports the president," Maggi responded: "I'm not in Congress, I'm a county commissioner. I appreciate the title you're giving me, but I have not voted (in Congress) or supported the president." "You said you supported the Democrat ticket and that you support President Obama," Murphy said. "I never said that," Maggi responded. "Yes you did, you said it as the Westmoreland debate.
