ReplyIf I may comment on the article (rather than other comments) ; - ). I think it's funny that researchers at a major university are spending their time researching this. Did they really think they would discover anything different than the startlingly obvious hypothesis that developing a habit of misusing punctuation, grammar, and spelling would result in declining spelling and grammar skills? Really? Who paid for that "research?"

ReplyIt's incredible how many quality extra-curricular learning opportunities are available to any who have the desire to learn, grow, stretch themselves, and have fun in the process. It's really a win for the whole community -- parents, students, and the school district.

I agree, OM is among the best extracurricular programs available in this area. It is also true that the school district expressly does not offer this program at the elementary level (below grade 6). Two of the four teams that are advancing to the state finals are elementary level, and were able to find other support in the community. Check out this letter to the editor on that topic: http://peters.patch.com/articles/letter-to-the-editor-sponsor-keeps-odyssey-of-the-mind-alive

ReplyGreat letter Julie, and great job to you and the kids and all the coaches and parents involved in making this program a success. OM has been great for our kids, and I'm pleased to see people in the community coming together to keep it alive. Thanks to Melissa and all of the coaches and parents!

ReplyNice Article. Great Job kids! I'm very proud of the work these kids have done, and pleased to have had my boys involved in OM for the past 4 years - more great experiences to come, I'm sure.

I don't think Roger's questions and comments are evidence of anger - he seemed fairly dispassionate and asked a relevant question. It would not be inapproproate, Stephanie, to heed your own words.
I also think that it would be useful to not lose sight of why the income range of "middle class" is relevant. If anyone can elucidate that, it might be a useful perspective that would add to this thread. I am tempted to leave it as intuitively obvious that it matters, but Roger's comment challenged me to think about it. Upon reflection, I'm not sure it's all that clear why it matters - it seems, at a minimum, to be of secondary importance. I'm not sure what social or governmental issue will be solved or clarified by settling on an income level that defines a social class.
