The story was just a repeat of a former one. It provides another opportunity for public statement that added nothing. We know the ticks must be made on the chart, and this satisfied one of the entries. The readers didn't just fall off the turnip truck yesterday. It think week's chart already has two ticks. The strategy is not obtuse.
Age has zero to do with online banking. I know elderly folks that use online banking, and I know younger folks who do not. I know elderly folks that do not use online banking, and younger folks who do. The "elderly" point was only for political points.
My post of May 23 is exactly the same one of May 17, that remains "Pending Approval." I just did a C & P. I asked for an explanation here, and received none. Mike told me approvals were made "when we have time." Does this sound right? How did one pass through the sieve, and the other get caught? I've asked before, with no answer, about "Pending Approval" for Board messages. Why the mystery? Even the Patch Support forum has a similar question, one that Patch has never answered. We realize it is your sandbox, and you have the right to make your own rules. But, why are the rules so mysterious that Patch will not address? What is to hide?

ReplyWhat does age have to do with users of the online banking? The "senior" insertion seems to be a pandering to the older voters who are fading from the demographic.
Joe, the story satisfies the requirement to make a tick mark beside "Week of May 12" for a Patch story. Anything to keep the streak alive, and the PNC story fit the bill for this week.

The sad part of your statement is that they DO usually get away with driving drunk. Statistics show a person having some encounter because of drunken driving (e.g. traffic stop, accident) drove impaired 78 times previously. So, yes, they do get away with driving while drunk often.
While we get excited to take precautions and add restrictions (e.g. very specific child safety seats, food regulations), we let at least 10,000 people die in drunken driving incidents in the US every year. Some say the death toll is 17,000. Another 40,000 are injured, and millions are lost in property damage and loss of productivity.
The penalties for DUI have no bite. Those responsible for making changes in laws and penalties do not with to offend their constituents, and also may jeopardize their own situation through their own behaviors.

ReplyIsn't this just more "program" in an effort to replace common sense? The crashes and loss of life is tragic, but seeing driving habits of many motorcyclists leaves most of us wondering what these people are thinking (or not thinking).
Then there is the matter of helmets. The state has very strict codes regarding child safety seats. The same group of legislators that impose these strict codes, are the same ones that repealed the helmet law. Likewise with bicyclist's helmets. We have much encouragement for anybody on a bicycle to wear a helmet. When I see a motorcyclist along side a bicyclist, the former with bare head, and the latter with a helmet, I can only shake my head. Driving a motorcycle at highways speeds (often higher) without a helmet, over against a bicyclist at 15 mph with a helmet, ... this is head-shaking stuff.
But, yet one more "program" thinking that the outcome will change the personal responsibility habits. What motorcycle rider does not know the dangers involved?
Stop already with more "programs!"

Reply"... every tongue ..." There are no exclusions. Thinking that eternal matters are of no interest, or don't concern me, is to deny the inevitable. Putting one's self at risk for eternal destiny is foolhardy. Yes, EVERY tongue, not just some.

On the article Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?
Roger

ReplyNo, this is not an answer to a simple problem.
Self-discipline and personal responsibility will go much further to curb DUI traffic accidents. Education has already been done, in many ways, numerous times, but to little avail.
Punishments for DUI need to be much stronger. I've made the suggestion previously: First offense, impound the vehicle for 6 months, second offense, impound for 12 months, third offense, impound for 18 months.
Legal means has shown not to be of much help. The impound process gets other people involved, such as family and friends. When the pain spreads to others, the influence of others will far more effective than changing the limits from 0.08 to 0.05. Please, there is no need to start with stories about encumbrances and difficulties for transporting children, getting to/from work, etc. Driving while drunk and causing harm to self and others is a far greater encumbrance.
Building impound yards is far cheaper than jail cells.
Remember, the drunken driver who causes an accident because of being impaired has been driving this way for an average of 78 times before being caught. Despite the blotters having entries of arrests, many, many others are on the road, driving drunk. This is the epitome of selfishness.
Why do we have roadside taverns/bars? Drive up, have some drinks, back in the vehicle, and drive away ... makes no sense.
Forget the change from 0.08 to 0.05, rather change the penalties.

Will somebody please explain "Pending Approval?"

Thanks, Amanda. "... if you have questions, ...," yes, there were several questions in my post, none of which were answered.
We are not too naive to understand the focus of the "follow up" story. Reminder: Turnip truck.
"... if anyone has questions ... call ... number ..." sounds like some politicians who would rather not make public discussion, rather engage in "he said/she said" discourse.
Thanks for your efforts.
